Marquette-Alger County Medical Society Alliance Annual
Report
MACMS-Alliance had a "local" focus this year. We combined
our volunteer efforts with on-going community projects, and involved
American Medical Association-Alliance resources to facilitate
our efforts when applicable.
May 2004: The Alliance donated $500 toward the renovation of
Bay Cliff Health Camp.
August 2004: Area physician spouses cleaned out their closets
for the 2nd annual garage sale to raise $250 for the AMA-Foundation-Education
Relief Fund.
September 2004: We partnered financially with the Marquette-Alger
Regional Educational Service Agency by providing $500 to host
a seminar featuring Mr. Stan Davis, a Violence Prevention Consultant.
Teams of administrators, teachers, school staff and parents attended
from Upper Peninsula and Northern Wisconsin school systems.
The AMA-A "I Can Handle Bullies" and "Hands Are
Not for Hitting" booklets were distributed.
October 2004: New spouses were welcomed and Harbor House was
featured at a social gathering. Members donated "wish list
items" to the shelter for victims of domestic violence, and
heard a short presentation from a Harbor House representative.
This served as our National S.A.V.E. (Stop America's Violence
Everyday) event.
November 2004: The needs of Habitat for Humanity of Marquette
County were relayed to the membership with hopes that some would
get involved on the board of trustees, committees, donate used
materials and/or work at the resale shop or assist the cause financially.
December 2004: The annual Medical Society Holiday Party auction
brought a $2,400 profit which was donated to Marquette General
Health System toward the purchase of a Blood Mobile.
February 2005: The Women's Winter Health and Fitness Expo was
our premier health promotion project held in conjunction with
the Subaru Women's Winter Tour. Attendance has grown to more than
400 women! Health topic presentations were coupled with cooking
demonstrations and fitness and movement classes to promote healthy
life-styles. AMA-A "I Can Be Healthy" booklets were
distributed, and pedometers were sold at our display table.
"I Can Be Healthy" booklets were also given to 4C of
the U.P. — an agency that trains child-care providers.
March 2005: We promoted Beacon House, our local "Home Away
From Home" hospitality house for radiation-oncology patients
and friends and family of those receiving care as in-patients
at Marquette General Health System. Members were encouraged to
contribute financially toward the capital campaign, supply specific
"wish list" items, or volunteer as a hostess or as shuttle
driver. Members prepared and served a dinner for guests.
A welcome reception for new spouses and a jewelry making session
(for a fee) was also held in March.
April 2005: We will partner with the Marquette Community Foundation
Homeless Prevention Coalition to sponsor a fundraising event.
Alliance members serve on the Board of Directors, solicit auction
items, and help execute the event. $500 was donated by the Alliance.
May 2005: We will hold our annual meeting with election of 2005-06
officers and choose the "Volunteer of the Year" candidate.
Throughout the year members gather informally for book club,
cross-country and downhill skiing, mountain biking, hiking, and
children's playgroup. A quarterly newsletter is published to keep
the membership informed. More than 70 spouses joined the Alliance
on the local level.

Medical Alliance Names Volunteers of the Year
Marquette, Michigan—The Marquette-Alger
County Medical Society Alliance has named Emily Lewis and Lynn
Moon as Outstanding Volunteers of the Year. Both were honored
not only for their volunteer work with the Alliance, but with
many other community organizations as well.
“Emily has the gifts of hospitality and organization in
great abundance,” says nominator Shirley Eppinga. “People
love to work with her because of these two traits. She can get
the job done right the first time, and make it fun to work together.”
Lewis, a Registered Nurse, is membership chairman for the Alliance
and has also served as hospitality chairman and in other capacities
over the past 10 years. During that time she has also served on
the Marquette Beautification and Restoration Committee Board of
Directors. For Marquette General Health System she volunteers
in the coffee shop and sews post-surgical masectomy comfort pillows.
She volunteers in several positions at St. Michael’s Church,
is the eucharistic minister at Brookridge Heights, and bakes for
the Keryx Prison Ministry, charity bazaars and school functions.
Lewis has also served the P.E.O. Sisterhood for many years, helping
to raise funds for low-income women to continue their education.
Lewis, of Marquette, and her husband, Dr. Larry Lewis, have three
daughters.
Of Outstanding Volunteer Lynn Moon, nominator Laurie Winkler
says, “Every organization she belongs to benefits from her
talents and enthusiasm.” And her talents are many. Moon
is a registered nurse and self-employed attorney, specializing
in health-care employment contracts, nursing licensure issues
and nonprofit law. She has served the Alliance in many capacities,
from president to treasurer to health promotion coordinator, and
is currently Northwest Regional Director of the State Board. She
is president of Girl Scouts of Peninsula Waters, where she leads
“extreme adventure” trips and serves as Clear Lake
Camp nurse for two weeks each summer. She was also instrumental
in organizing the first Women’s Winter Health & Fitness
Expo in conjunction with the Women’s Ski Tour. In addition,
Lynn is vice president of 4C of the U.P, president-elect and legislative
advocate of Marquette General Hospital Volunteers and is a member
of the Peter White Public Library Board of Trustees. She is representative
assembly member and chair of the Rules and Calendar Committee
of the State Bar of Michigan, and belongs to the Marquette County
Bar Association, the Michigan Bar Association and the American
Association of Nurse Attorneys. Lynn is married to Dr. Don Snowdon,
and they have one daughter.
The Alliance is comprised of spouses of physicians. The group
offers various health promotion and health education activities
throughout the year and supports such organizations as Bay Cliff
Health Camp, Habitat for Humanity, and MARESA. For more information,
contact Alliance President Jennifer Vander Roest at 249-3440.
