Spring Membership Meeting - Tuesday, May 9th
Revelry in Red
Our 2004 Holiday Gala not only featured
good times and great food, but a good will as well, as a raffle
and silent auction was held to benefit the Upper Peninsula Regional
Blood Center, which is working to purchase a new blood mobile.
The MACMS Alliance organized the fundraising effort, which netted
$2,400. Thanks to the many generous donors and buyers, and to
Avant Gardens Floral, Meister Weddings and Garden Bouquet Floral
for creating and donating the many gorgeous floral centerpieces
which were also auctioned off.

Upper Peninsula
physicians and legislators challenge obstacles to health care
Physicians from throughout the Upper Peninsula met with
state and federal legislators in August to discuss some of the
most pressing health care issues, including universal health care,
Medicaid reimbursement and the effects of smoking in the workplace.
The inaugural Legislative Summit on Health Care, sponsored by
the Marquette-Alger County Medical Society and moderated by President
Dr. Tom LeGalley, included appearances by U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow,
D-Lansing, and State Reps. Stephen Adamini, D-Marquette, Rich
Brown, D-Bessemer, and Tom Casperson, R-Escanaba. About 45 physicians
attended the summit in Marquette and posed questions to the legislators.
“Events like this are important because they ensure that
our representatives in Lansing and Washington are kept apprised
of our concerns, and we in turn are aware of what efforts are
being made in the state legislature and Congress,” LeGalley
said. “At this time, when the health care industry seems
so unsettled, such meetings are extremely valuable.”
Stabenow had words of praise for the assembled physicians.
“Thank you for all that you do. Thank you for hanging in
there when there is more paperwork than there is reimbursement,”
she said. “Thank you for being willing to hang in there
for people, because in the end, that is what it’s all about.”
Adamini, who sits on the state House Health Policy Committee,
said legislators, physicians and the rest of society need to work
together to fix the problems.
“Our medical delivery system is the greatest achievement
of our society. I think it far surpasses putting a man on the
moon,” Adamini said. “But our society’s greatest
failure is that we have not found a way to pay for this miracle
system we have developed.”
